post production is painful

So I managed to download Final Cut Pro... I have resorted to Trial version. It's completely new to me, because I'm used to Adobe After Effects, but even with that I only know how to move around graphics in the most basic ways, as you have probably seen from my previous motion graphic projects.

Anyway, I have decided that my videos lack texture, and I think Mr Ben also pointed this out the last time I saw him for consultation. I found this amazing person on YouTube who gives out free texture overlay videos, and they're all HD.... So thankful people like him exist!

the other stuff

I used this book to find retro patterns to sort of reassure me of the kind of color schemes I had to go for, because I felt like my collection of color references were insufficient, which is an understatement. I actually have too much on my phone and my iPad... and my laptop.

Here are pictures of what I've done so far..... I think I'm basically done for the filming part. Hopefully I don't have to refilm anything because I left all my props back at home in Brunei..... Because my apartment is too small to store all of that stuff. Or perhaps my apartment just has too much stuff because I... am quite the hoarder. But anyway.

progress update

Day 1 of filming was crazy because apparently I only had one day to shoot the opening scenes (the ones that require my actress) because she was unavailable on other days. But we tried our best. Took a lot of takes, so hopefully they're okay. Didn't get to do 2-3 scenes though. So I'm pretty sad about that. But I'm still pretty positive about everything.

I bought a dress for my actress and also, managed to get my mom to sponsor me for fabric and tailoring for a custom dress which costed her about 85 bucks in total. Yikes. And no, not in RM, in BND which is equivalent to SGD. I feel bad, but the dress looked amazing!

Left is the custom-made one, right is the one I bought somewhere here in Malaysia. I've been eyeing on that shop for quite a while now because of their pretty dresses. I don't wear pretty dresses, so I never actually buy anything there. But now I can say I did! Anyway..

The dress was sort of supposed to have this kind of 'feel' (see photo above). I didn't pick a similar color to this though, because I was being really careful with the fact that these scenes were going to be in black and white, and so the fabric needed to be 'contrasty', and not soft and pastel-ey. I also requested that the dress should be below the knee because the dresses back then were of that sort of length.

I trusted my mom to take a look at cotton fabric that looked old-fashioned and take pictures for me so that I could choose the most suitable one. She gave me a lot of choices.

These were the top three because of the contrastey-ness.

In the end, I picked the one with a white background, because I'm sure it would look better, as opposed to a dark color background.

Here are some pictures of when we filmed the car scene:

Yeah, we had a few problems.... My dad told the guy that we would be at their house at 2 but we ended up arriving around 3, because of hair and make-up. And he started the engine early for us, I don't know why, because I didn't say we needed the engine warmed up or anything hehe. But yeah so we... had to use the whole car jumper cable thingy which I have no clue about but I always see my friends doing it. Haha all I know it that it involves the car batteries, and cables. And magic happens. But this wasn't the case. Magic did not happen, because the other car's battery thing was also sort of weak or something... because, well... Idk, it's also sort of an old car I guess.

And yeah, I wasn't helping, because I was distracted by this other car. Haha. But in the end, we had to push the car out of the garage... I can definitely say I played a part in helping with that because I have no pictures of that incident. I helped the 2 guys push the car out. And as a result, I was sweating like crazy, which sorta caused me to be a bit sloppy in the filming process.

Anyway, yeah so then we managed to push the car out a bit - it wasn't easy because it was jammed........... Idk what 'it' is but something was jammed so it was REALLY hard to push the car out, even with 2 big dudes as the 'main pushers' haha.

It was pretty hard to film, because the car had no radio so we were in awkward silence haha, and I didn't think to bring speakers for my iPhone... oh well. Another difficulty I faced was that there were a lot of "modern" cars around, so I had to frame all these scenes in such a way that none of them could be seen. WHICH WAS HARD. *Cries* but I think they turned out okay.

skinny wallet

I bought so much stuff yesterday. And today. Stuff for this project. I will upload pictures tomorrow. Lighting isn't so good right now since it's night time, and I should be sleeping.

Besides blowing off a lot of cash yesterday, I've also began to pay attention to patterns and color schemes for the paper cut-out parts.... Made a "moodboard" on Instagram. I also did some over-thinking - the patterns and color schemes need to look good together, as in, in a scene-by-scene context, if that makes sense, which is why I started compiling patterns according to color. I don't want everything to look too similar. I want as much color as possible.

I got a dress for my actress, but I'm getting my mom to sponsor me to get one custom made for my actress back at home.... haha but I'm not sure how it's going. So I'm probably going to buy another dress as backup.

I've also sort of have a rough idea of what songs to use in the video.

Can't buy myself a radio or a retro tv because that'd be too expensive, but I think I might've found a way.... Not sure though but I've got the Radio sorted out.

clearer idea

So just incase you have no idea what's going on with my personal project.... Basically, I'm creating a series of TVCs to promote an imaginary concert. This concert is a tribute concert to all female musicians particularly in the rock genre that has existed since the 60s according to my research.

And not a lot of people know about this, because it still seems to surprise people when they discover all-girl rock bands in this era who make awesome music with dirty riffs and kickass drumbeats and sexy basslines (excuse my language, but in my defense, I am talking about rock here).

I feel like women are still being underestimated by men. I also think women's capabilities are underestimated by other women, too and this is probably because these women are the ones who are passive about how men view them as being capable of doing whatever men expect them to do -  in a 50s 60s context - things like putting on pretty outfits everyday and doing their hair, putting on make up, washing the dishes, taking care of the kids, cooking for their husbands, having tea and cigarettes with other women, etc. Yes, I know things have changed since then, because today, women have careers and are more independent, we wear jeans, we can have really short hair, women still cook for their husbands, sometimes their husbands take care of the kids at home, women can do a lot of things men can do.... so yeah, things have changed. But I'm sure a lot of people are still surprised when they see women doing things that mostly men do... For example, if you see a woman working at a construction site or doing some welding.... or fixing your engine at the workshop.

This is Gypsy, a character from Gilmore Girls who is the most knowledgable car mechanic in Stars Hollow. All the men bring their cars to her when they don't know what's wrong with it (which is almost all the time). Yeah, I'll admit I laughed when I first discovered her, and a bunch of other people would too, because it's funny. That's not how it's supposed to work, you think. In real life, it's the other way around. You see? That's exactly what I'm talking about. Anyway, I think she's cool. I wish I could fix cars. I always just hang around my dad fiddling about with the engine when there's something wrong with one of his old Audis. I occassionally ask him questions about what he's doing in hopes that I understand and remember them. But uhhh..... nope. I ain't no Gypsy. Ahhh, imagine that - a place where women mechanics are a completely normal thing.

Another example would be, Orange Is The New Black. This show portrays women being capable of doing all sorts of awful things. But mainly because the show is in a prison setting. Still! Pretty cool.

In this season we get to know these women a little better. They are not just harmless women who have been locked up and are only capable of knitting and crochet (although they do have great skills at this). These are dangerous women, more dangerous than many of the other inmates. Remember, Litchfield might have major faults in its administration but it’s a minimum security facility. These ladies started off in maximum security and have been moved up for good behaviour. Yes they look frail and helpless but they must have done something once to get themselves locked up for so long! We get to see this in action in Season 2 Episode 9 when Frieda, Irma and Taslitz attempt to threaten the kitchen crew in order to obtain food items that had been promised to Red by Gloria. At first, Flaca and the rest of the kitchen staff don’t take the threat of a couple of elderly ladies seriously until they are held at shiv-point. It is then that it dawns on both the inmates and ourselves that these women are bad-asses, they are capable of some scary shit (chopping off their husband’s appendages for one) and they are not frightened to carry out their threats. Indeed, they later discuss how disappointing it is that they are always underestimated just because of their age. However, there are drawbacks to being an OAP (Old Age Prisoner in this case) and we see this clearly in the plan to attack Vee in retaliation for the discontinuation of the gardening club. Taslitz is obviously very capable of holding her own and stabbing someone, it’s just a shame that her eyesight isn’t great and she stabs the wrong person. It’s a wry glance at how the elderly get overlooked, but sometimes they really aren’t as capable as they once were. (https://mrshbookworm.wordpress.com/tag/orange-is-the-new-black/)

Sounds scary doesn't it? Haha. But it's pretty cool how they portray women on this show.
When I watched Orange Is the New Black, I did not find the characters in the least cuddly, nor lovelorn damsels wistfully whiling away their time in jail. The show does not for a moment delude you into thinking that the women are anything but criminals, nor does it obscure that many of them are capable of real violence and otherwise fucked-up shit. Think of last season’s portrait of Miss Claudette, a woman who not only was actively involved in the child labor trade, she murdered a client. (http://www.bkmag.com/2014/07/01/stop-trying-to-make-orange-is-the-new-black-about-mens-issues/)

"It is absolutely true that in society, women aren’t seen as being capable of violence to the same degree as men. I’m glad that the author addresses stereotypes like that."

Anyway, back to my project. This is all related to my project, but I'm concentrating on music. These TVCs are basically going to start out with a female character, doing all sorts of feminine things that they're expected to do in a 50s 60s context with background music that gives out a very feminine feel. This has to be a song from that era though, because it makes sense. Also because songs back then were very nice. Basically everything is going to be very girly, womanly, whatever you want to call it. Ladylike? Yeah, that's probably the right adjective.

And then there will be a 'transition' scene where, for example, they would turn on the radio, or put on a record, etc, the music immediately changes to a heavy rock song by female bands from the new generation. It needs to be a heavy rock song so as to show contrast with the previous song. This will emphasise the whole point. You think women are just pretty little creatures who do all these women-things, but in fact they are capable of being crazy rockstars who make awesome music too.

When the music changes, there will be a series of scenes where I will make use of a lot of pretty little props to show the names of the bands who are performing at the all-female tribute concert. I'm thinking of calling it THE FEMININE COMPLEX. Named after an actual all-female rock band from the 60s. I was also thinking about KITTIE RIOT, inspired by that Russian feminist punk rock protest group who go by another name that's um... sort of inappropriate.

These props will have a theme of course.
The keywords are: 50s, 60s, Patterns, Floral, Bright, Contrast, Girly, Colorful, Retro, Vintage.

I collected some visuals on a new Instagram account I made for this project. I think it helps a lot.

This is a new board I made on Pinterest. You can never have too much inspiration.

you need some catching up to do

I haven't been updating on my blog, but that's because I moved to my new sketch book!

I showed my progress on my sketchbook about 2 or 3 weeks ago to Mr Ben with these inside them:

still here

Obviously, I'm still in the development stage. I have yet to draw out the storyboards, planning out on how to actually make this video into something that informs people about something interesting and not merely for the purpose of entertainment.

If I haven't already mentioned what I am actually doing, allow me to explain it here and now, for your benefit as well as mine:

Since this module's aims are: 1) to investigate and critically evaluate new developments in digital technology with regard to new forms or methods of design communication or technology, 2) to encourage the development of new design skills through a process of self-directed learning, and 3) to enable students to understand the need for self-development and innovation through a creative design solution:
      the idea
I propose on creating a video with complex (keeping in mind that I possess very limited capabilities in this field, after all, I am not an IMD student) editing skills. I am planning to learn these skills by watching a range of tutorials online in the form of videos as well as in written form hoping to actually get the gist of it all. This video aims to inform its audience of the fact that all-female rock bands have existed as early as the 60s. Most people would have probably thought that they had only begun their existence in the 80s, which is not true. This video will be in black and white to act as a, sort--of--visual cue to indicate that this is about something old. This would be an advantage especially in the case where a potential audience only starts watching it halfway into the video as they would know nothing about it, but due to this visual cue, they would at least know something. Apart from this, the girls who will be acting in this video will be wearing costumes from the particular timeframe, with hairstyles and props that will also give hints to the audience. The unique thing about this proposed video is that it will look like it is old due to its black and white state, or --for the sake of sounding professional--due to the Mise-en-scène, but at the same time, it will look current as the overlays will be in color. The video, as a whole, combines old and new visual styles so it would be interesting to watch, along with the fact that it actually has a message. Therefore it is both entertaining as well as informative. I have already showed what the visual styles are going to look like through my inspiration videos on my previous posts. To add, as far as how I am clearly going to indicate that it is an informative video, I think it would be interesting to make it in the style of those classic instructional videos. If you're not sure about what I actually mean... it's these kind of videos:

Trying to start my effort in doing some research about how I will get around applying a similar kind of effect to the video inspirations I've shared in the blog earlier. The first step is obvious--Googling it. I did ask Mr. Ben about what key words to actually use when I come to the point of looking for tutorial videos for these particular styles of 'overlaying' - which I wrote on a piece of paper somewhere (I hate it when I forget my sketchbook on important days). But I do remember him telling me to look up how to properly film with a green screen and editing them out when I come to the post-production stage of the film process. Apart from this, I also seem to remember him mentioning the term  'Colorisation'. Below are some videos that I think are useful for my learning process for this proposed video:

That's all I've got so far. As far as in written form. I found these, which are actually useful. Don't laugh.

"As movies move further into the digital realm, the job of animating the lightsabers gets slightly easier, but not much. In a digital world, each frame of the movie is scanned into a computer at extremely high resolution so that each frame can be manipulated on a computer screen. To make the lightsabers look real, the special effects artist looks at each frame on the computer screen, outlines the broomsticks, colors the areas and diffuses them (frame by frame by frame...). Instead of being done on a plastic cel, it is all done on separate "cels" in the computer's memory and then merged digitally. However, there is no way to get around the fact that the animator must look at each frame and outline the lightsaber blades one by one."
